Breakfast Meeting Minutes
February 13, 2008


The Lyndon Area Business Association breakfast meeting was held at Lyndon City Hall, 515 Wood Road, Louisville, KY 40222. A total of 32 attendees were present on a very wintry morning with many school delays and business closings in the community. (Original sign-in sheet on file at LABA office.)

Dave Austin-LABA President opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. Catering & More was recognized for catering breakfast. Karen Finlinson with Park Community Federal Credit Union & Mike Lorenzen with Edward Jones Investments who are LABA Board Members, were recognized for their assistance in greeting attendees.

Dave mentioned we have an LABA Suggestion Box that will be available during each meeting. Your ideas and suggestions are very important to the Association. Please feel free to provide your feedback using the suggestion slip provided and drop it in the box.

Introductions – Dave asked each member to introduce themselves and their business.

Stacy Kimmel, LABA Vice-President and with Fenley Real Estate advised we currently have 145 members, which is up from 117 in January 2007. She advised all members are valuable to our Association and recognized several new members who have joined the Association since December. Teresa Watson-LABA Secretary/Treasurer and with National City Bank advised that LABA has a link on the City of Lyndon’s website (www.cityoflyndon.org) that is under construction. We hope by the end of March to provide you with a new and improved web site. One of the areas that will be included is a Calendar of Events. Teresa reviewed the following upcoming events:
 Thursday, February 28th from 5-7pm – Business Connection at La Vida Java Coffee Co. at 1301 Herr Lane (Westport Village). It’s a great networking opportunity
 Monday, March 3rd from 2-8pm – Blood Drive at Lyndon Fire Department, 8126 New LaGrange Road. Donors are needed!
 Next monthly meeting – Wednesday, March 12th from 12-1pm here at Lyndon City Hall. Brett Johnson with the FBI will speak on Corporate Fraud.

Teresa also mentioned that the January Business Connection at Joe’s Older Than Dirt was a big success. Your participation is appreciated at LABA Events. Teresa introduced John Lincoln with the YMCA to talk about a special event.

John advised that the Northeast Branch of the YMCA is offering a one-day guest pass to all LABA Members. A flyer and guest pass will be emailed to each member along with today’s meeting meetings. He mentioned that they would have staff members available to talk with you about corporate plans, the services they offer and much more. John also discussed the new water park that is currently under construction. LABA very much appreciates the partnership with have with the YMCA and this great offer for our members

Dave introduced today’s guest speaker, Dr. Michael Guirguis with the Baptist Healthcare System. His specialty is Internal Medicine and his topic is sleep disorders. Some of his background includes: In 1993 he graduated from Cairo University Medical School in Egypt. In 1995 he completed military medicine internship at Egyptian Military Medicine Academy in Cairo. In 2004 he completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Dr. Guirguis provided members with a handout and highlighted possible reasons for sleep disorders. He spoke about the importance of diagnosing and treating it in order to avoid further medical problems. He discussed an initiative called “sleep hygiene” which provides you with steps to keep your bedroom clutter free in order to promote good sleeping habits. Some additional information:
 One-third of all Americans have sleep disorders at some point in their lives.
 20-40% of adults report difficulty sleeping each year
 17% of adults consider the problem to be serious
 Types of sleep disorders include:
o Initial Insomnia – difficulty in falling asleep
o Middle Insomnia – difficulty maintaining sleep
o Terminal Insomnia – early morning wakening
o Hypersomnia – excessive daytime sleepiness
o Sleepwalking – episodes of complex behaviors during NREM sleep.
 Causes of sleep disorders include:
o Depression
o Anxiety
o Stressful or life-threatening events
o Shift work (Such as workers at Ford, UPS, etc.)
o Sleep deprivation

Dave thanked Dr. Guirguis for speaking to the group. He then conducted the door prize drawing donated by Barton House Alzheimer’s Personal Care at 6830 Overlook Drive, 423-7177. Due to the weather their representative, Bari Lewis was unable to attend. Vicki Lenz with Coffee News Louisville won the prize. LABA will be sure she receives the door prize. If anyone is interested in donating a door prize they will be given time for a “2-minute” commercial during the meeting. Mike Lorenzen, LABA Board Member and with Edward Jones Investments asked for everyone’s support for our Blood Drive on March 3rd from 2-8pm as previously mentioned. We are working with 4 local banks on a friendly competition to increase donors. Our last drive resulted in 30 donations. Our goal for March is 40-50 donations. Please participate and bring a friend.

Vicki Lenz with Coffee News Louisville advised the group that she would publish the blood drive information at no cost. She will be more than happy to work with any LABA Member on communicating non-profit, community related events. Please contact her at 499-5635 or Vicki@CoffeeNewsLouisville.com
