Luncheon Meeting Minutes
July 8, 2009

The Lyndon Area Business Association luncheon meeting was held at Lyndon City Hall, 515 Wood Road, Louisville, KY 40222. A total of 50 attendees were present. (Original sign-in sheet on file at LABA office.)

Dave Austin-President opened the meeting and shared the following information:

Welcome – Dave thanked everyone for attending. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Recognized Donna Little with The Dessert Gallery, 9305 New LaGrange Road, 326-0700 for catering for today’s meeting. Our last general meeting was in May due to the Lyndon Area Fair. Thanks to everyone for their support on this annual community project.

Blood Drive - LABA is hosting a Red Cross blood drive on Monday, July 20th from 2-7pm at the Lyndon Fire Department, 8126 New LaGrange Road. Donors are needed.

Office Depot Purchasing Program - As a LABA Member you are entitled to great savings through the Office Depot Purchasing Program. Becky Kane is available today to share more information and sign you up to start your savings today. Please see her after the meeting or email her at becky.kane@officedepot.com.

Introductions – Everyone was given an opportunity to introduce themselves and share their business information.

Speakers: Today’s speakers are from the University of Louisville. Dan Hall is the Vice President for Community Engagement & Kathleen Smith is the Chief of Staff to the President. They provided information about what’s going on at the University of Louisville. Highlights provided include the following:

    o University of Louisville works to be “an anchor within our community”
    o 20,000 students currently attend UofL
    o Economic impacts to the community - 6,000 people are employed by UofL
    o So many areas of our community are impacted by the education at UofL-Dental School, Public Health, Community
       Science Center, Law Enforcement, Attorneys, Etc.
    o Sports are of course a source of pride for UofL but also culture and the arts are very important. Developing partnerships to
        improve the quality of life of our residents is one of the key goals.
    o 7.5% of the annual operating budget is dedicated to public service
    o Support local organizations such as Kosair Charities, Crusade for Children, Fund for the Arts and the Metro United Way and
        more.
    o A new under graduate program is being implemented to include a mandatory “community based learning” course.
    o On-going partnership with UPS to provide classes to their employees at specific times
    o Improvements have been made in the student housing areas

University of Louisville presentation continued:

    o Branding initiatives include utilization of celebration banners around campus to highlight student & faculty individual
       accomplishments
    o Plans for new areas include the development of Shelbyhurst at Shelby Campus, Stansbury Park, Freedom Park and adding
       more green space around the community.

Door Prize Drawings –. Today LABA is sharing welcome bags from the Lyndon Area Fair. They contain some great gifts from our members. Erica Beasley with BB&T also shared door prizes with the group.

Announcements
    o The LABA Board has been approached about participating in Metro’s Green Mile Program. We adopt a street locally in the
       community and provide quarterly clean-ups. Bags and gloves are provided by Metro as well as disposing of the trash. We are
       looking for a volunteer to lead this project. Please contact Dave or Cathy Robertson at lyndonbusiness@bellsouth.net if you
       are interested.
    o Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, 700 Lyndon Lane is hosting a National Ice Cream Day celebration on Sunday, July 19th at
       2:00pm. Dave will be participating in an ice cream eating contest to benefit a local charity. Please come out and lend your
       support. If you interested in participating please contact Terri Guethenspberger at Bruster’s 425-9436.

Upcoming Events:
    o Business Connection - Thursday, July 30th from 5-7pm. Sherry Oexman at Pineapples & Polkadots in Westport Village
       will be our hostess. It’s a great networking event which we continue to provide at no cost.
    o Next Meeting – August 12th Luncheon meeting at 11:30am.
